Our school was founded in 1949 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI -Congregatio Caritatis Verbi Incarnati). The CCVI's had their beginnings in Galveston, Texas. Their founder, Bishop Claude M. Dubuis, second Bishop for the entire state of Texas, was a French Missionary.
Bishop Dubuis, in 1866, returned to France and ask for Religious Sisters to care for the sick, the dying, the poor, and the deprived. Three women responded and formed a new religious community, The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Since that time, the Sisters have expanded their ministries. They serve the people of Texas, Louisiana, and California in the US. They also have ministries in Guatemala, El Salvador, Ireland, and Kenya. Their mission and ministries are an ongoing response to the plea of Bishop Dubuis so many years ago:
“Our Lord Jesus Christ, suffering in the persons of a multitude
of sick and infirm of every kind, seeks relief at your hands.”
Father John Lane, the second pastor of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, led the implementation of the parish plans for building a school and convent on the property purchased on Palmer highway. In 1948, Fr. Lane asked Mother Elizabeth O’Neill for the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to staff the future facility, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on March 19th, 1949, and was officiated by Bishop Christopher E. Byrne. Six months later on September 14th, 1949, the Bishop dedicated the new school and two-story convent. Seven Sisters were missioned to teach and administer to the education of its first students numbering 239 in grades kindergarten through seventh. Thus began the ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in answering the call of their founder, Bishop C.M. Dubuis to serve the people of Texas City, Texas.
We are the second oldest Catholic school in Galveston County. Today the school operates under the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and is accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department.
