Religion
OLOF middle school students will study many topics throughout their time on campus. In religion class, our students will focus and learn about the Old and New Testaments, study the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and complete Mass reflection assignments. Other topics based on grade level include an introduction to scripture, Christology, and church history. All middle school level students attend weekly mass on Wednesdays. Middle school students are required to have a set number of service hours each semester, some of the hours will be completed through school service projects.
ELA
Reading and English Language Arts courses Consist of Vocabulary, English, Writing, and Reading. Students will have daily practice in reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. By middle school, students should be reading fluently. Students begin to focus on writing while reading. Students learn to develop a well-thought-out thesis and supporting details through various school and home projects. Our Reading instruction uses a combination of a basal reader and novels throughout the year. Students are expected to read AR books, complete products, and take AR tests to achieve an AR goal every nine weeks. Advanced grammar skills are taught using the curriculum.
MATH
Our Math courses Include mastery and extension of elementary material, problem-solving, and pre-algebra. Students are expected to have mastery of math facts at the middle school level. Students will have access to hands-on and digital math resources and practice. Our 8th graders also have the opportunity to enroll in Algebra and receive High School credit with successful completion of the course.SCIENCE
Science courses include lab stations, class projects, interactive science, and reading and comprehension of theories and laws. Middles school students will learn and discover all aspects of Earth, Life, and Physical and Environmental Science areas. Some topics covered are force and motion, potential and kinetic energy, transformation, organisms, cells, classification, space, planets, lunar and star cycle, matter and energy, density, and energy source. Newly introduced to our school is a STREAM Lab component for all middle school grade levels, in which students will have the opportunity to use their gained knowledge and skills from all subject areas and their own creativity to collaborate and engineer many projects on a weekly basis.
Social Studies
Social studies courses consist of completing projects, reading and discussing chapters, and understanding and using note-taking skills. Students will have access to various physical and digital resources throughout the year. Students will focus on different cultures and how they influence the world today. Students will explore different continents and countries while perfecting mapping skills, note-taking, and memorization. Seventh graders will explore the rich culture and history of Texas. Our eighth-graders will learn about and explore the founding of our nation and explores how the Civil War affected our nation. During the second semester, all middle school students will complete a major research project based on a given historical topic.
Technology
Students learn software applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), research on the Internet, cyber safety and acceptable use, how to use educational search engines, keyboarding skills, and computer knowledge and terminology. Students are introduced to intellectual property concepts.
Middle school students also have 1:1 technology assigned to them upon signing and returning the technology agreement.
